Is Your Lawn Accelerating Climate Change?

Your Lawn's Impact on Climate ChangeClimate change is a legitimate concern the world is facing. While there are natural causes of climate change, the burning of fossil fuels is the biggest man-made factor we as a society need to solve. Some negative effects of climate change include higher temperatures, rising sea levels, melting of the world’s ice caps, weather-related disasters and increased drought. Global action on this dangerous phenomenon is becoming a top priority for our world’s leaders.

Paris Climate Conference (COP21) – A Resolve to Curb Global Warming

At the Paris Climate Conference (COP21) in December 2015, over 195 countries adopted the first-ever universal, legally binding global climate deal. This agreement aims to limit global warming to below 2°C by 2020. In order to achieve this, the world must stop the growth of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and reduce them by 60% by 2050, compared with 2010. As expressed in the adaptation agreement under the proposed climate deal, “society needs to play a pivotal part in restoring balance to the world’s climate.”

Major Global Climate Deals and Lawn Care, What’s the Connection?

Front Lawn Care MaintenanceA study published in the Journal of Environmental Management by Dr. Chuanhui Gu from Appalachian State University’s Department of Geology found, “the total CO2 emissions from lawns in the U.S. is about 25 million tons annually.” These emissions are primarily released from the 2.2 billion gallons of fossil fuels used for gas-powered mowing and the manufacturing/application of synthetic fertilizers in the U.S. each year.

Lawns are not inherently bad for the environment; it is how they are traditionally managed with synthetic solutions and fossil fuels that boast the most concerns.

Dr. Gu noted best management practices that promote healthier and more sustainable lawns should be adopted to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Switching to organic lawn care is one part of this change that can yield substantial results.

How Synthetic/Chemical Lawn Care Treatments Accelerate Climate Change

Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, especially nitrogen based ones contribute to global warming.  These fertilizers create major soil deterioration, which inhibits healthy root growth. They also kill off microorganisms the soil needs to stay healthy. Without these microorganisms, plants can’t capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and the depleted soil cannot store the excess carbon; instead it’s put back into the atmosphere and not converted into healthy food for plants.

Organic Lawn Care Not Only Benefits the Climate, It’s Also Healthier for You

Relaxing on Organic Lawn

Organic fertilizers foster growth and produce healthier lawns. Soil treated with organic applications are carbon-rich, which helps combat global warming. This natural approach to lawn care allows soil to store excess carbon instead of putting it back into the atmosphere and use it promote nutrient rich organic matter.

Soils rich in organic matter drain better, prevent water pollution, support beneficial insects and sustain plant growth; meaning the grass is:

  • healthier
  • more resistant to disease and adverse weather conditions
  • capable of suppressing invasive weeds
  • more drought tolerant and requires less water

Organic options are not only more climate friendly and more beneficial for lawns than their counterparts, they are also safer for pets, kids and wildlife.

Switching to Organic Lawn Care, A Small Change with Big Results

No matter how organic and sustainable a lawn is, it will always emit some amount of greenhouse gas because it’s a natural process. In fact, every piece of land, not just lawns, emits NO2, one of the most problematic greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. But, we don’t want to nor need to add on to this perfectly natural process.

We want our lawns to be healthy in order for them to store as many of these dangerous climate changing gases as possible rather than emit them. Every small change we make now will lead to bigger, more positive impacts on the future.

Choosing to treat your lawn with sustainable resources will make for a healthier lawn and safer environment.
